The Wheels On the Bus Go Round and Round!

This was a very interesting assignment to do. At first I thought I was going to hate it , but it actually turned out to be really fun. The assignment was to ride a public city bus at least a mile and to observe the surroundings. It started out with me and my friend Shannon trying to read and understand the route map and times. After and hour of confusion we finally figure it out that there was a bus stop a block away from our house.
On our way to the bus stop I saw a city bus coming. So I yelled "Shannon! There it is!" (of course Shannon was already crossing the street trying to find the other bus stop) she ran across the street and we both then ran to the bus (looking like complete idiots) and then found out that it wasn't the bus that we wanted to get on. We cross the street again and wait for the bus at the bus stop we were suppose to be at. The bus comes, we hop on and scan our student cards and look what we found.....Lilly and Jenifer! Some familiar IARC faces! We were relieved to see them and relaxed a bit. We all decided that we wanted our final destination to be the Friendly Shopping
Center, but in order to do this we had to ride to the depot in downtown Greensboro to switch buses. On the way there I noticed this plaque in the window...
I immediately thought of our reading about civil rights and segregation. It made me think of how things use to be. That if the bus had been full when I got on, a black person would of had to give up their seat to me. It's absolutely ridiculous that someone would have to give up their seat just because of the color of their skin so ROCK ON ROSA! Thank God, things have changed!
(I also noticed there was a lot of trash on the floor.)

After about a 5-10 minute ride we arrive at the depot. We spotted the number 7 bus that we needed to get on and ran to it.
We all make it to bus number 7 and off we go again. As soon as the bus starts to go, I notice a sign behind our seat...
OOPS! We didn't get yelled at, but we still felt bad.
There were lots of different people on the bus, it was really interesting to observe.

We were scared to take pictures of people without them knowing so we acted like we were taking pictures of each other and just aimed the camera over who ever's shoulder. (haha)

Finally! Friendly Center at last! Along with being the last ones off the bus! ...I had a lot more fun than expected!

This sketch pretty much sums up the first week of school for me....it rained ALL week and having to walk 20 minutes both ways to get to and from class isn't really my cup of tea. It was very stressful having a project due the first friday of school, but it got done and we were all happy with the outcome.

These sketches are from a place called elsewhere. It's a place in downtown Greensboro that has stuff EVERYWHERE and pretty much every random thing you could think of in it. I liked and didn't like this assignment. Elsewhere had plenty of interesting stuff to draw, but it was all covered in dust and my allergies are horrible, so I pretty much died every time I went there to draw stuff hours at a time. Our assignment was to mark off a space with some duck tape and then draw that one space in detail. My space took up 2 class periods to draw so I'm pretty happy with the outcome of it. The other sketches were ones I did when we weren't working on our final sketches.

Our class was asked to invent a product this week made out of bottle caps. Bottles are accumulating more and more everyday and we need to find ways to reuse them to save the environment. After brainstorming separately we were asked to pair up and work together.

Our Sketches.

After listing pro's and con's of each item we decided that a placemat would be the most functional and creative product we could create.

The next step to our process was going around to every single door in the dorm asking for bottlecaps. We needed to do this first to see the color results to create our design. We then went back to the studio and sorted out all of the colors. We noticed a dominance of clear and white caps with various little amounts of colors. We chose orange, blue, and green because it is a triadic color scheme on the wheel and we thought they worked well together.

After getting advice on the design from outsiders we redesigned our concept and plan. Since there was no way we could collect even more caps we decided to break apart the first model and reuse the caps.

At first I HATED this project! but than grew to like it. I think I didn't like it at first because I had NO idea what to do and I had never really worked with wood before so not only did I not have any ideas, I had no idea as to what I was doing down in the wood shop. After playing around with some ideas using the ban saw, I finally went back to my original idea of making a system that overlapped, interwove, and connected. That idea was inspired by a picture I had seen earlier in the process of where a bunch of train tracks intersected. In the end I feel like I did a good job and am happy of what I was able to do with a single 2x4 of wood WITHOUT using glue or nails to hold it together.

It's the little things that count....

The Design Finder firm was probably one of the most boring firm websites I look at. They didn't have many pictures of their work on their page and what the did have look really plain and boring.

I don't know why but the pictures don't line up with the text, but it's in order!

This Black and white cover is simply yet will make you want to buy the book after looking at it. It's classy and elegant with a display of great photography on the front, big enough to see.

This cover has a creative vide to it. I like different things that are put together to make one thing look complete and thats what they have done here.

I don't really know how I feel about this cover.
It's almost too simply to be a book cover. I think if they added some more lines and color contrast it would be more interesting.

I love love LOVE this cover! It's so neat looking! It doesn't have much color, but I don't think it needs it. I wouldn't change a thing about this cover!

This cover to me gives off a 70's vibe for some reason. I like it because it's vibrant with color, but then I don't like it because I think it's kind of busy.

This cover reminds me of my old high school english text book. Thats never a good thing.

I like the idea of having the pictures faded out around the edges, but I think the picture on this cover could have been a better one. This one is kind of boring looking and I think the text should be more interesting as well.

This cover reminds me of like a journal cover, so if this book is based off a journal than I'd say it's better good. If not, than they need to pick a new cover.

I love this layout! I think it's very simple and modern. The only thing that I would probably do different is change the pictures. I feel that they could of been better.

I like the color combination on this cover, but thats about it. Think the layout was poorly done and the title should be bigger.

This table is very modern and sophisticated. I could easily see myself putting this table somewhere in my house. I don't really see this table in a living room or game room because I feel it gives off a more formal feeling. I think that this table should be put in a room that's rarely used, such as a sitting room.

I love this table! I would put it in my family room if I had a house and a family of my own that is...I think that this table is so funky and fun and modern! The only this I would probably change about it are the wheels on the bottom, there's something about them that bothers me but I can't figure out what.

I thought this table was very interesting. I have never seen anything like it before. It's very vibrant and colorful so that's part of the reason I like it. Again, it's very sophisticated and I could see it being in a high class Manhattan, New York apartment having cocktails being placed upon it.

I could see this bar stool/table set being in one of my future apartments. I thought it was very modern and would love to sit at with a good friend (or boyfriend) and eat dinner.

I don't know why, but I'm always attracted to things like this. I think it's because I like furniture with compartments and storage. The only thing about this piece that I don't like would be how they have so much of it blocked off and just have some selves on the side. I think I would of liked to seen that big sheet of frosted glass or whatever it's made out of split of into more sections to even it out with the selves on the side.

I picked this light fixture because it reminded of my of my mom in a weird way. Whenever I see that combination of colors I think of my mother because she always decorates in those colors. Being my mother's daughter we have similar taste so this light fixture would be ideal on a wall in ether mine or my mom's house. I like how the shape of the glass is shaped like a big wine glass. That shape has sophisticated and classy written all over it.

I like this light fixture and how it doesn't really give off light but more of a glow instead. Of course you wouldn't use it as a reading light or something that requires a bunch of light. I think it would be used as more of a decoration that for the purpose of light. The phase "just sit there and look pretty" comes to mind when I look at this piece.

This is the ultimate kitchen table light! I know when I have a kitchen table of my own I would love to put this type over it. The shape makes it relaxed and fun, unlike the every day kitchen table light that is usually a chandelier of some sort.

This fixture I can see hanging over an island in the Kitchen. It gives off just enough light to do what you need to do, but at the same time doesn't over power the room with a massive amount of light.

COMPARTMENTS! and lots of them!...Don't get me wrong I know I said I love compartments and storage earlier, but this could be a little much now that I think about it. This piece would probably look best in a section of a small store like a coffee shop of some sort.

Magistrates' Court holds an interesting shape to it. It's very old timey looking and I love to look at old buildings and see the procession that has been made by architecture today.

The Black Friar is kind of run down looking, but I like it for some reason. I can see myself fixing a building like this up and renting it out a small apartment of some sort.

1 Poultry is a little much for me. You have this already weird building structure and then to add to it you have horizontal stripes all the way around and up and down. No thank you, not for me.

The Gehry TowerI love how this building is so out of place with it's rotated side. I know if i was walking down the street and saw this building I would stop and take in the uniqueness of it in.

The Walt Disney Concert Hall. My first word when I saw this building ..."wow." There is not a single thing I would change about this building. The architecture's amazing, the lighting is perfect, and the amount of creativity definitely shows. Bravo!

The John Hancock building is also very beautiful. I think I like it because it's beams that go up the side of it remind me of a big water tower or something. It's definitely a site I want to see in person.

I think this building is called the Green Building, but I couldn't resist putting in it on here because it's one of the few building that has color and looks like some creativity was incorporated into the design of it.

St. George's Hall is an absolutely beautiful building. It reminds me of a cake in the night with the top part lighting up like frosting on a cake.

Empire State Building. How could you not LOVE this building. It's the tallest building I know I have ever seen and the view from the top is amazing. However, I do feel like it might be a little plain and might need some what of a creative boost from the 21st century.

The Lamborghini Building caught my eye because number 1 THERE'S A CAR ON THE SIDE OF THE BUILDING! Number 2, you usually don't see building shaped like that and I thought it was really interesting. I wonder why they chose that shape? Number 3, THE CAR ROTATES FROM THE OUTSIDE TO THE INSIDE!

This website is overwhelming. I find it hard to navigate and understand. It would of been much easier to know what to do if everything was big and clear up at the top like most websites usually are.

Nancy Sanford is a designer from Denver, Colorado. Her design studio opened in 1995. Nancy Sanford Design Studio's website has a very simple set up. The navigation of the website is easy to follow and is very basic. She has everything you would need to know about her and her work such as a profile, services, press and articles about her and work, her portfolio, and how to contact her. I thought it was really neat how her work in her portfolio was a slide show and from the look of it she does some really modern and abstract work.

Sustainable Design

I'll just start off by saying that all of these pieces are amazing and I'll probably be repeating myself a lot

This color is so vibrant and full of life! I love this bed! Although, I don't think I would wanna sleep in it. It doesn't look to comfy.

However, I could see myself taking a couple of naps in this chair. I'd rest peacefully knowing that I'm helping the earth because I bought the chair that's made from natural resources.

I would probably put this chair in my living room (if i had one that is) It'd be perfect for a formal setting in a room.

This sofa I do believe would be going in front of the TV along with the recliner so I could take naps on both of them after an a crazy day at the studio...It looks so comfy and cozy! LOVE IT!

This chairs are so cool! They're very neat and abstract. I could see these chairs in a funcky living room or out on a screened in porch.

This two chairs to me are kind of plain and boring, but they're saving the earth so that makes them AMAZING!

This chair...will be going on my back porch overlooking the mountains one day. It has that red that will pop and that texture that make you wanna sit down and enjoy life.

Again, I love this bed, but it doesn't look comfortable to me and thats a very important quality for me when it comes to me and beds. If you haven't noticed already by the nap comments, I like to sleep.

From looking around online and reading articles I have summed up what sustainable design means to me. It's designing something that will be able to be environment friendly and will be preserving what we have left on this earth. Some have called it "Green Design" which if I must say would be a proper name for it considering it's all for the cause.

Design and construct a container to house a personal memory.

My memory was...
Senior year prom, an event a teenage girl will never forget. My prom experience wasn’t however, the fairy tale story that is expected to have. It was pouring down rain by the time picture taking was over, the food I ordered at the restaurant was horrible, and my best friend ended up getting into a fight that I had to break up on the dance floor. Although prom hadn’t been what I expected, when I look back I’ll still be able to say that my senior prom was amazing. There was a moment that goes above and beyond all prom moments that I’ve had. At the same time that our prom was going on, there was a jazz band playing in the streets of downtown. Hearing the festive music made us decide, “hey lets do something different!” so we walked with our fancy dresses and tuxes through the crowds of casual dressed people and made something our own. Something no one else did on prom night. We drank coffee, danced in the street and walked through the riches of downtown Winston-Salem.

This was my first attempt...I thought we were suppose to somehow relive the memory and I did this by creating the illusion that you were going to walk down an ally that we saw, but no I was wrong. I was told that I needed to create more of what I was feeling when we were walking downtown rather than walking in downtown itself.

So I started writing down words to help me think of a feeling that could describe this one thing we did that nobody else at prom did. Then the word "different" appeared on my paper and BAM! I had my next idea! I didn't really have the right materials to make this at the time, but lets just say that it's the "ghetto" version of what I had in mind.

Final product! I chose to do this because I wanted to have something that had everything the same, but then had one thing different from the rest because walking downtown on prom night was different. Nobody else did it and it was a special thing to do. Color wise, I pick the colors black, red, and gold because those were the prom's theme colors. I tried to make that one square stand out as best as I could with a gold glossy paint compared to the dull red paint. I think it worked.

So once again...I can't draw faces...especially my own. I felt like I couldn't really do any shading because I think my desk lamp was WAY too bright and the room was too small. I went in the bathroom to do this so I think that was half my problem.

Pencil Box

Make a pencil box using paper and adhesive.

1st Attempt

Usually when you think of a pencil box you think of something square or rectangular or even cylinder shape, well I wanted to think outside the box and create something different. Something that doesn't have clean cut lines and straight edges. I wanted to go for a messy abstract look because it was different from everyone else and plus my desk is messy most of the time so I figured I would go with it. I started out with paper ribbon that I found in a yard sale last year and has been sitting in my closet waiting to be use for something. Well Tada! the time has come! I braided the ribbon and then hot glued it together on top of some mat board that was also covered in paper ribbon. The outlook was satisfying, but the glue showed too much and it was still too "clean" looking. So for my 2nd one I constructed it a different way. I still braided the paper ribbon, but instead of glue I just wove pieces of ribbon through the braids to pull it together. I think the "messy look" was achieved in the end.

A Place for An Egg

This project was a long process. We had to create a place for an egg that celebrates a quality of the egg using only paper. I went through many ideas and finally decided on this one. The quality I decided on was the geometry of the egg. The egg is placed in a square hole in a square box to show contrast of shape. I pick black because it gives more contrast to the white egg and used white out to emphasize the straight edges. Over all I thought it turned out pretty good.

Out of all the blogs I've looked at, I can't help but keep going back to Tommy Kane's Blog. He's always updating it and changing things around. I love how after every sketch he posts he describes in detail what he was thinking when he sketched it. The way he takes real images that he sees in his everyday life and then makes them art is what amazes me most. None of his sketches are exact, he draws the more simply version of what the eye sees.
